Vienna Girls Choir and Vienna Boys Choir at the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert

2023 sees the 525th anniversary of the Vienna Boys Choir, and the year starts with a premiere: For the first time, the Vienna Girls Choir will join the Vienna Boys Choir at the New Year's Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic. Conducted by Franz Welser Möst, the joint choirs will sing "Heiterer Muth" (Serenity), a French polka by Josef Strauss, the younger brother of waltz king Johann Strauss.

Austrian designer Eva Poleschinski has created a new outfit for the girls, to match the boys' trademark sailor suit. The new look was financed by entrepreneur Klemens Hallmann.

The choirs' Artistic Director, Professor Gerald Wirth: "We are delighted that both boys and girls were invited by the Vienna Philharmonic to sing at what is one of the biggest events in Classical music - and it is simply super to have the girls in their new uniforms."

The Vienna Girls Choir is set to join the boys again at the next highlight of the year, a special anniversary celebration in Vienna's Musikverein on 14 May 2023.
